本片為日活創立90周年紀念作品，改編自山本周五郎的短篇小說《何處花香》和《露水未幹》。日本殿堂級導演黑澤明1994年撰寫該片劇本，並繪出主要人物、場景和分鏡頭。然天不假年，影片未及拍攝黑澤明便遽然離世。經其長子盛邀，著名導演熊井啟擔任本片的導演，黑澤明之女和子則擔當服裝設計。
