2082年2月13日，65536個外星探測器包圍了地球，初時它們如同鑲嵌在大氣層中的無數個黑洞，其後它們一起燃燒殆盡，引發了地球以及地球同步軌道上的所有無線電同聲共鳴，每一架紅外線望遠鏡都只能看到一片雪花。一場短暫的、明亮的，來自不明生物的窺測。


地球方面探測到信號的來源，先後派出三支隊伍前往源頭——海王星軌道附近柯伊伯帶上的一顆彗星，本斯—考菲德進行勘測，前兩支隊伍均為無人探測器。在第二波無人探測器即將靠近時，星核中埋有人造儀器的本斯—考菲德爆炸了。


天火墜落兩個月後，包括主角在內的第三支探測隊出發，途中爆炸的消息傳來，飛船自行改變航向，載著船員前往大朝型星體大本。


船員們陸續從星際旅行的休眠中醒來：一個擁有四重人格的語言學家；一個以植入機械設備取代五感的生物學家；一個戰鬥指揮官；一個吸血鬼；以及一個綜合家——人工去除了一半心智的拓撲信息觀察者，作為向中心彙報情報的紐帶。他們將要面對的是戰鬥還是談判？他們能否解讀外星生命的密碼，揭開天火墜落的真相？



作者簡介

加拿大科幻作家，不列顛哥倫比亞大學博士，曾從事海洋生物工作多年，專注硬科幻寫作。《環球郵報》稱他是“在世優秀的硬科幻作者之一”，作品已被翻譯成21種語言出版。1999年發表處女作《星魚》（Starfish），因其生動詳實的海洋生物與深海環境的描述廣受讚譽，後與續集《大漩渦》（Maelstrom）和《太古菌反撲》（Behemoth）共同構成“裂谷人三部曲”。《盲視》（Blindsight）是他的第六本作品。


十餘年來，彼得·沃茨曾多次入圍並獲得科幻界重要獎項：2000年，《星魚》入圍約翰·坎貝爾獎；2007年，長篇小說《盲視》入圍雨果獎、軌跡獎、坎貝爾獎，並獲當年加拿大極光獎最佳長篇及2014年星雲獎最佳翻譯長篇；2010年，《島》（The Island）獲雨果獎最佳短中篇；2011年，《怪形》（The Things）獲軌跡獎佳短篇。
